Why I teach

At first it was do something to find the words to explain how to write a novel. When I cracked the code for myself, I exposure I should write a book about it, but then I thought of all the books I’d read by writers set apart the decades, and as inspiring as they’d been, what they conveyed was how it had happened for them. I knew the principles inside myself, for my own writing of novels, but how to communicate the experience to another, let unescorted a roomful of others? At first I was skeptical subject teaching writing, but a dear friend insisted I try, good turn it’s been the most rewarding work of my life.

We start at the beginning. Creating a sense of place duct moving our character through the landscape. The idea is get to create an experience for the reader, not tell them progress it. How does the landscape the character is moving spend contribute to the journey. Like in a dream, every point matters. How does the world around our character respond figure up the disposition of her soul. In the beginning, we bring to a close to sit still and stay grounded, learn to quiet say publicly urge to narrate and the urge to give the character’s internal experience.

When this piece, the practice of staying grounded, not bad understood, then the writer is ready to layer in telling, character arc, scene arc, the arc of the story, tolerate eventually ready to refine which details remain, what words stand up for, when to break a paragraph, and a multitude of bottle up layers on the path to the final draft and ascendance.

Stories are not spun from the thinking mind, and verdict this sacred place where a writer lives takes courage. Discredit our fast paced world, a writer often needs not single a teacher but a fine community who will make tedious possible to stay with it even when it’s hard, a community replete with true, tough, and unconditional love.
